The author studied dozens of memoirs of his compatriots, smart and talented people who lived in Germany or visited the country in the thirties of the last century: American ones: American diplomats, military, journalists, writers, artists, athletes, businessmen, tourists.

In relative security, they observed Hitler's arrival as the non -alternative leader of the Reich. Saw the violence of the "party of power" over political opponents; Repressions regarding national minorities, homosexuals, social democrats and everyone who did not keep up with the coat of hatred with a totalitarian state.

Some of these third-party observers did not think about what horrors of the war and the Holocaust could end in the populism of the Nazis. Others deliberately turned a blind eye to “excesses” because they liked a new energetic and inspired Germany. But even those who critically related to Hitler were able to realize the true scale of the disaster, when it was too late to change something. However, they tried...

the author himself partly repeated the fate of these people: as an unreliable correspondent of the world's leading media (Newsweek) was expelled from the USSR during the period of “twisting of the nuts” and the entry of Soviet troops into Afghanistan.
