Katsusika Hokusai (1760–1849) is one of the most famous Japanese artists of the Edo period. Throughout his life, he published albums of engraved drawings called “manga”. In fifteen outlets with four thousand figures and motives, Hokusai presented the encyclopedia of old Japan in pictures - from the gods and heroes of antiquity and ending with modern amorous deeds, homemade uglings and a variety of natural views. The full and detailed commented publication of the “manga”, by the fullness of illustrations and historical comments, has no analogues in the world.
