The Russian -speaking Israeli prose writer David Markish is the author of two dozen books in which Russian and Jewish history and culture are inextricably intertwined. The new story “In Refusal”-in fact, the author’s story about the truth of the life of those who in the 1960-1970s had to live in the most free country in the world, “where a person breathes so freely.” Before the reader's eyes, the bright, sometimes satirical images of the divided society are held: “Rich-piddle, west-east, left-right, Semites-Anti-Semites, fools-humid, and more, and more, and more...”.
