In 1904, the doctor Vikenty Veresaev was called up for military service, assigned to the field mobile hospital and sent to the east. He found the battle on the Shah River, the battle of Mukden and peaceful negotiations. From the first days, Veresaev plunged into the bloody chaos of hostilities, became a witness to the incompetence and indifference of commanders and officers, as well as the heroism of ordinary soldiers. Working in inhuman conditions, Veresaev and other doctors and residents saved the lives of the wounded and patients passing through their hands.
