In this book, Clara Moritz explores the transnational emigrant space that developed around Igor Stravinsky, Vladimir Dukelsky, Sergey Prokofiev, Nikolai Nabokov and Arthur Lurie in interwar Paris. Their music reflected the conflict between the modernist narrative requiring innovation, and the narrative of exile related to the preservation of pre -revolutionary Russian culture. The opposite ideas of emigrants and the Bolsheviks about Russia and its past often came across in the French capital, where the Soviets demonstrated their political and artistic products. Russian composers in Paris also had to reckon with the disproportionately great influence of Stravinsky: if they succumbed to the fashion dictated by their famous compatriot, they risked becoming epigones; If they remained in their former positions, they risked becoming irrelevant.
