The book included two novels by Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelev (1873-1950), one of the most striking spiritual writers of Russia, repeatedly nominated for the Nobel Prize. The first work tells of the feelings of a talented serf artist to a young beauty-bariocracy. A story in which there can be no happy ending, nevertheless ends with a miracle. The story of Rosstani is about death. But, described by the eyes of the believer, death is perceived as a natural link in the chain of eternal life. And appeasement blows from the last days of the protagonist, a rich merchant, whom the author draws with love.
