The famous composition of the great holy father of the Western Church of the 4th-5th centuries. Blessed Augustine, Bishop of Hippon (354-430), “Interpretation on the Gospel of John” in 124 conversations, or reasoning, is a classic patristic commentary on this special, different from the first three, so-called synoptic, gospel. This essay was compiled by Blzh. Augustine in 413–418. Part I of reasoning (1-54) was uttered. Augustine in the temple in the form of sermons, and part II (55-124) was, as expected, dictated by it to complete this treatise, possibly a little later. For the first time published in Russian, “Interpretation on the Gospel of John” clearly shows the personality of Blzh. Augustine and his pastoral approach in the preaching of the Gospel and his explanation of his flock. It is saturated with theological, as well as polemic, against heresies and schisms, and moral content. In the essay, both the general church position on theological issues, and the provisions that are personally characteristic of BLZ are manifested. Augustine, the great thinker and theologian, and inherent in the Western theological tradition as a whole. “Interpretation on the Gospel of John” occupies a worthy place among the great biblical interpretations of the era of the unrequited church and will be useful for the widest circle of Orthodox readers who study the Bible and those who are not indifferent to its patristic explanations.
