The island of Barrey is so small that only one family lives there. They keep cattle, catch fish and use everything that the waves are carried ashore. Their life is difficult, and nature is harsh and solemn. Barrey is a real island in Northern Norway, the novel is based on genuine events of 1913-1928. This is the first book of tetralogy about the Barrey family.

Roy Jacobsen (b. 1954) is considered one of the most significant authors in modern Norway. He became the first Norwegian author to enter the short list of the International Buker Prize and the International Literary Dublin IMPAC for the novel “Invisible”, which became a bestseller in almost all 30 countries where he was published.
