The novel is based on the real events of 1896, when a group of Swedish pilgrims left the country and founded a new settlement in Jerusalem. In 1899, Selma Lagerlöf went to the Jerusalem colony to see how her compatriots live. She also visited their homeland and met with their relatives and friends who remained in Sweden. According to the results of her journey, Lagerlieff wrote a novel that contributed a lot to the presentation of the Nobel Prize.
