Kalevala
For the first time in more than one and a half centuries, the first prose translation of Kalevala, prepared by the famous St. Petersburg publisher and writer Eduard Andreevich Granostrem in 1881, returns to Russian readers. The world-famous Karelian-Finnish epic “Kalevala”, which was based on the ancient folk songs-runs, is on the significance and beauty on a par with the Scandinavian “Edda”, the German “Song of the Nibelungs” and the Homeric “Iliada”. Under the influence of this epic, dozens of masterpieces were created, such as Silmarillion, Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, John Tolkien, who, inventing the language of the elves, imitated the sound of the tanks of Kalevala.
The distinguishing feature of our publication is not only a wonderful classic translation, but also the rare illustrations created in the same publication, created by the classics of the Finnish, European and Russian book graphics.
