Legend of Tatra. Tetmayer K.
“The Legend of the Tatra” consists of two parts, and they are named by the names of the main characters - Marina from the rude and Janosic Nends Litmanovsky. The plot of the novel dates back to the middle of the XVII century. The oppression of the Polish peasants at that time reached such a limit that it could not but cause opposition from their part, which spilled into different forms - from spontaneous popular uprisings to Zbuinitvva, that is, robbery.
Tetmayer turned in his novel To the period of Polish history, the image of which was already canonized by the “trilogy” of Henryr Senkevich, and entered the historical and art polemic with the Nobel laureate. “Tetmayer’s novel is largely diverging with the“ trilogy ”of Senkevich,” writes the Russian historian I. S. Miller, “these discrepancies relate to the largest problems of the history of that era: assessment of the liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people, assessing the role of Polish masses in the struggle against the Swedish invaders, finally finally , assessments of the historical role of the Church. But, despite the importance of these specific historical problems, it is necessary to pose a different, more general question - the radical difference between Senkevich and Tetmayer in their relationship with the peasantry and the gentry. ”
the fascinating epic of the gentry-pyzar heroics, the author of the Legend of the Tatra contrasted a novel from peasant life, and the romantic halo that he surrounded by some of his characters did not prevent him from reliably convey the color of the era.
And, Roman, in the excellent translation of Vladislav Khodasevich.
