This textbook sets out the main issues of semantics as an integral part of the course of the general theory of language. The first section of the book contains the introduction to the subject, a brief outline of the history of semantic teachings, including their latest history, and introduces the concepts used in the semantic description of any significant language formations - from morpheme to the whole text. The second section is devoted to lexical semantics. It discusses the main problems and methods of describing the meaningful side of the word as a unit of language and speech. The third section analyzes the semantics of the sentence, taking into account its three aspects: logical-semantic (propositional), communicative and pragmatic, and formal means (metalams) used to describe it are discussed. The problems of semantics are considered in the textbook from the point of view of the activity approach to the tongue and in the context of the diverse tasks facing applied linguistics. A number of the chapters of the textbook are detailed illustrations of the presented ideas and methods on the material of specific semantic research of the author.

The textbook is addressed not only to students of the linguistic departments of the faculties of the philological profile, but also to specialists dealing with the creation or analysis of texts in the natural language : literary scholars, journalists, translators, copywriters, etc., as well as everyone who is interested in the device and functioning of the language.
