Contemporaries called Korolenko "the conscience of the era." His popularity was very great, almost the entire reading of Russia was listened to each of his words.
some attracted the author’s ability to compassion and love, his other optimism and the belief that a person is leaded by a desire for justice. The ideal image of the Russian writer and intellectual was seen in him by Leo Tolstoy and Ivan Bunin, Maxim Gorky and Anton Chekhov.
Korolenko entered the history of Russian literature primarily as the author of numerous stories and stories that made up a kind of chronicle of Russian life at the turn XIX - XX centuries. The most famous of them (“Makar’s dream”, “Children of the dungeon”, “Blind musician”, “The river plays”, “Without a tongue”, etc.) are presented in this collection.
