Lomonosov project and Chichagov expedition
The book “Lomonosov’s project and the Chichagov Expedition”, first published in 1854, was compiled by M.V. Lomonosov “A brief description of different travels along the Northern Seas and the testimony of the possible passage of the Siberian Ocean to East India”. The publisher of the book, Alexander Sokolov, considered this work the most important of Lomonosov’s works. And today, this historical review remains very curious and politically significant, since it reflects the merits of Russia in the research of the Arctic. The project itself for a modern reader looks fantastic, since it implies the passage of a wooden sailing ship through the North Pole, but this does not belit the historical value of the study at all. The Brigadier rank Chichagov, the acquittal of Chichagov, explaining the reasons for the failure of the expedition, the documents of the Admiralty College and the letter related to the sending of both swimming of Chichagov, as well as the description of his travels. The composition of the collected works of Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov, but the whole selection of texts that give a complete picture of the premises, preparation and attempts to go on a sailing ship through the North Pole has not been printed since 1854. Texts are printed in modern spelling, with comments.
