The book is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Belarusian writer, participant in the Great Patriotic War Vasil Bykov (1924–2003). After graduating from the infantry school in the rank of junior lieutenant, Bykov fought from the fall of 1943 to the victorious May 1945; Three times wounded, he wore a fragment in his right hand until the end of his days.

In all works of the writer there is one unchanging hero, and this is by no means the author himself, whose invisible presence is one way or another each time significantly. This hero is true. And this hero Bykov remained faithful in the most gloomy years, when he was banned and poisoned “from Moscow to the very outskirts.” With his frankness, the author tells about the most striking episodes of his life, gives an assessment of the socio-political and cultural processes that took place before his eyes. And although autobiographical moments are present to one degree or another in most Bykov’s works, this last book is no doubt the most confessional.
