Lost heaven. Returned Paradise. Milton J.
John Milton was born in the family of a London notary. Having graduated from Cambridge, having perfectly mastered ancient and modern languages, Milton became one of the most educated people of his time. He lived a stormy life, paying tribute to scientific studies, politics and religion, but his name remained for centuries thanks to poetry, primarily the poem “Lost Paradise”, first published in 1667.
This epic drama, in scale, is comparable with the creations of Homer, Virgil, Dante and Shakespeare, became one of the greatest works of English literature. In this publication “Lost Paradise” is printed in the translation of Arkady Steinberg and is accompanied by a complete set of classical illustrations of Gustav Dorea. The book also included the poem “Returned Paradise”, based on an episode from the New Testament of the temptation of Christ Satan, the tragedy “Samson-Borets” and the best examples of Milton's lyrics.
In addition to the illustrations of Dore, the publication includes illustrations by William Harvey, George Warton Edwards and Arthur Rackham (colored engravings for the elegant pastoral "Cosmos"), which have never previously published in Russia. The texts are accompanied by detailed notes of an outstanding literary critic, a specialist in foreign literature Andrei Nikolayevich Gorbunov.
