“Love your neighbor” (1939) is a novel about German emigrants forced to wander around the pre -war Europe. They hide, starve, secretly cross the boundaries, many of their relatives and friends in concentration camps. Having lost his homeland and the usual way of life, undergoing mortal danger, the heroes of Remarque still find the strength for compassion and love.

The romance was first published only in 1941, immediately after his film adaptation.
