German Melville (1819 - 1891) - an American writer who went down in the history of literature thanks to his famous novel "Moby Dick, or White Kit." Nowadays, Melville is considered a classic of US literature, one of the largest figures of American romanticism.

The novel “Mardi and the Journey there” was a turning point in his work, since in it Melville first moved away from the usual topics and created a complex Philosophical allegory, which turned out to be incomprehensible to readers and critics.
