This book is the first biography of Lermontov, written by a famous writer, historian of literature, Professor Pavel Alexandrovich Viskovatov (1842–1905) according to the memoirs of relatives, friends, people met with a poet, as well as documentary materials available at that time.

The publication was published in 1891 and almost immediately became a bestseller, withstanding many reprints in 130 years. This is a very interesting author’s view of the life and personality of the poet, analysis of creativity, biography, as well as his environment and era as a whole. Despite some tendencies and involuntary tribute to the ideas of a “progressive society”, this work has become a valuable source of information about Lermontov and the basis for further research. We can say that she laid the foundation for Russian Lermontanism.
