Honore de Balzac is a great French writer who, by the definition of Leo Tolstoy, "at that time learned to write everything." In the numerous novels of his “human comedy”, he recreated a motley, cruel and many -sided world, reflecting the life of all the classes of modern society. The book "Mischial Stories" stands apart in the work of Balzac. This is a collection of playful and funny short stories, stylized under Bokkaccio and Rabelais, in which, as opposed to the sad romantic motives, the Gallic liveliness and merryness, and the action was resurrected to the distant past. Bright, unusual plots, descriptions of sophisticated love pleasures, incredible adventures, expressive heroes (many of which are real historical persons, including monarchs and libertines) and excellent humor provided “mischievous stories”, despite the outraged accusations of critics of obsceneity, which is unfavorable among wide The masses of readers.

The real edition included all the “mischievous stories” of Balzac, including five stories that were not published during the life of the author. The texts are accompanied by illustrations by Gustav Dore (1832–1883), whose magnificent, live images of the characters of “mischievous stories” remained unsurpassed. The publication also includes a set of illustrations of the American artist Ralph Barton (1891–1931) and the chosen illustrations of the French artist Albert Robid (1848–1926), never published in Russia.
