Joseph Edward Davis - diplomat, lawyer, specialist in international law, US Ambassador to the USSR from the end of 1936 to mid -1938. Along with the fulfillment of direct diplomatic duties as an ambassador, Davis collected information about the economy of the Soviet Union, Industry, and Culture , conditions and lifestyle of citizens of the country. On the instructions of the president, the ambassador was to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the Soviet leadership, based on personal observation. And Davis fulfilled the task assigned to him: according to Roosevelt’s assessment, he "showed amazing abilities to evaluate current events and determine their influence on the future with unusual accuracy."
In the work on the book, the author used documentary materials, introducing confidential dispatches to the State Department, excerpts from diaries, official and personal correspondence.
