Lev Karsavin (1882-1952)-Russian historian, professor of St. Petersburg University, one of the passengers of the “Philosophical Steamboat”, published this small but extremely informative book over a hundred years ago. The author represents the history of the monasticism of Western Europe fascinatingly and amazingly manages to trace the origins of monasticism, its historical roots, to tell about the predecessors, the appearance of monasteries, the organization of life in them and heretical trends, bright historical personalities, about monastic, knightly and poor orders and much more without which the understanding of the history of the Middle Ages and the Catholic Church is inconceivable.
