Matthew Gregori Lewis (1775 - 1818) was known primarily as a playwright and poet of the circle of Byron and Shelley. However, the real glory was brought to him by the novel "Monk", written in his youth and became a bestseller and the cause of a loud public scandal. “Monk” is one of the four great books of the first wave of “Gothic” literature, which had a direct influence on the “Italian” A. Radcliffe, “Elixirs of Satan” E. T. A. Hoffmann and “Fleet of the wanderer”, C. R. Matyurin, brother Ambrosio, eagerly believing the Spanish monk, known for the power of his sermons, is not able to withstand the passion for the beauty Matilda.
