The book is devoted to the history of the first Russian museums of historical-humanitarian profile, the formation and development of which was considered against the background of the historical and cultural development of the country from the end of the XVII to the beginning of the 20th century.

The authors trace the origins of the formation of museum collections, the history of the formation of the main museums countries, the main trends in the development of museum affairs and its specific features in various types of museums.

The book is illustrated by photographs and drawings, some of which are represented by the materials of the oldest specialized photo archive of the Institute of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg), and also museum and personal archives.
