The history of somnology is given, including the discovery of Soviet and Russian Somnology in the second half of the XX and early XXI centuries. The issues related to the regulation of the “wakefulness-zone” cycle are considered. The author’s views on the acute issues of somnology are set out and possible ways to solve problems are justified. In the final chapter, the “Adaptive function of sleep” summarizes modern ideas about the function and biological role of sleep.
