North and South. Gaskell E.
The top of the English female prose of the time of Queen Victoria, in addition to the sisters of Bronte, is represented by Elizabeth Gaskell. The fascinating works of the writer, telling about the complex fate of people, about the power of love and spiritual searches, were highly appreciated by Dickens, who printed them in his journal. In the novel North and South, the main character is forced to exchange the measured life of Southern England for a hue of the northern industrial regions. Here, getting acquainted with the difficulties and need of workers, Margaret Hale decides to devote himself to their protection, but a more powerful feeling than a desire for justice rises in her way. Roman North and South enjoys well -deserved popularity and was twice filmed by BBC: in 1975 and in 2004.
