Elizabeth Gaskell, the famous writer of the Victorian era, reckoned, along with Charles Dickens, William Mapis Thaceree and Charlotte Bronte, to the brilliant galaxy of English novelists of the 19th century. Gaskell's works, telling about the complex fate of people, about the power of love and spiritual searches, highly appreciated by the already mentioned Dickens, which printed them in his journal. Unfortunately, in Russia, the writer's work was not as widespread as in the whole world. Until now, only two novels have been translated from her heritage into Russian: Mary Barton and Kranford. In this publication, for the first time in Russian, Roman Elizabeth Gaskell “North and South” is published in Russian - a love story, told in the best traditions of Victorian literature. Until now, admirers of the work of Elizabeth Gaskell in Russia had the opportunity to get acquainted with this novel only from the excellent adaptation of the 2004 BBC. The main character, a native of Southern England, Margaret Hale, is forced to move to the northern industrial areas. An impressive girl is deeply outraged by the terrible conditions in which the workers live, but her indignation against the owner of the factory John Thornton involuntarily develops into a gentle feeling. The heroes throughout the novel have to overcome many prejudices, learn to see the world more widely and fully, without dividing it into black and white, by the north and south, to learn kindness and humanity.
