Roman Elizabeth Gaskell “North and South” is a love story told in the best traditions of Victorian literature. The main character, a native of Southern England, Margaret Hale, is forced to move to the northern industrial areas. An impressive girl is deeply outraged by the terrible conditions in which the workers live, but her indignation against the owner of the factory John Thornton involuntarily develops into a gentle feeling. The heroes throughout the novel have to overcome many prejudices, learn to see the world more widely and fully, without dividing it into black and white, by the north and south, to learn kindness and humanity.
