New Roman Alexei Makushinsky, son of the famous prose writer Anatoly Rybakov. Alexei Makushinsky is a laureate of the Russian Prize and twice the finalist of the Big Book. His prose is often compared with the prose of Marseille Proust: long stylistic periods, figurative descriptions, exclusive attention to the psychology of heroes and history. The new book will appeal to those who managed to love the “Steamboat in Argentina” and “Suburiations of thought”, who became the finalist of the “Big Book” last year. On the eve of the closure of the borders and the universal Locdown in Europe in March 2020, the hero of the novel with his wife goes by car from Munich to Belgium to the Van Eyka exhibition. On the way, he recalls his older friend who has long died, but in his youth of the hero who had a strong influence on him. Yas (Yakov Semenovich), art critic, met and made friends with a young man in the early 80s in the Pushkin Museum. The storyteller was very impressed with communicating with Yas, and the senior comrade became for him for a while a friend, an adviser and indisputable authority. But the exhausting novel of the narrator with a difficult girl Mara made a young man coolly change his life.... In the second part of the book, it turns out that everything was not at all in the way the narrator still believed. Details in the biographies of the characters and in their relationships are opened, which he did not even know about.... Or just guessed. But all this is done unimportant against the backdrop of the departed youth, a life -consist and impending pandemic. In the novel, a lot of attention is paid to the description and comprehension of paintings by Jan van Eyke and Rogira van der Weiden.
