From the group of bodyguards in black uniforms, the SS grew up in an influential organization, which had a full-fledged army at the disposal of the SS troops.

the German historian and chief editor of Spiegel magazine Hinz Heen (1926-2010) was a witness to the appearance and SS growth in Germany. Despite his service in the German army during the Second World War, Heen was an opponent of National Socialism and the SS.

In his book about the SS, first published in Germany in 1966, he has been telling the history of security detachments from the moment of creation in 1923 to complete collapse in 1945, focusing on the participation of SS in crimes and organizations of concentration camps, the influence of the SS leadership on the domestic and foreign policy of Germany, the role of the SS in the occupation mode and the destruction of Jews.
