Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809-1852) was born in the village of Veliky Sorochintsy of the Mirgorod district of the Poltava province, in the family of the landowner. In addition to him, there were still six children in the family. Gogol’s father, Vasily Afanasevich, had some literary gift - he wrote several comedies in Ukrainian. He died when Nikolai Gogol was 15 years old. Gogol’s mother was a sensual and religious woman, hence the religiosity of Gogol himself.
Nikolai Gogol graduated in 1828 by the gymnasium of higher sciences in Nyzhin. The future writer dreams of a legal career, but, having entered the department, is disappointed. In 1829, he took the first steps in literature - he prints the poem “Ganz Kuchelgarten” under the name of V. Alov, but after mocking reviews he burns it. Following this, it publishes the story “Evening on the eve of Ivan Kupala”, and then “Evenings on the Farm near Dikanka” and becomes famous. At this time, Gogol meets Pushkin, who tells him the plot of the “Examiner”. The premiere of the play took place in the spring of 1835 in Moscow, in the Small Theater.
Gogol leaves for Germany, and then to Switzerland, where he is taken to write “Dead Souls”. Abroad, he learns about the death of Pushkin, who prompted the plot of “dead souls”, and perceives bitterly the spelling of this novel as a testament of the poet. After the first volume of “dead souls”, Gogol again leaves for the border and takes on writing the second volume, but he has signs of a mental crisis. The writer returns to Moscow and, continuing to work on the novel, falls into depression and burns the manuscript. Only five chapters remained, which were published after the death of the writer.
Nikolai Gogol died in 1852 in Moscow, was buried in the Danilovsky monastery. In 1931, his ashes were transferred to the Novodevichy cemetery.
