“Parisian Secrets” Eugene Xi - perhaps the most popular novel of the 19th century, which gave rise to many imitations and created a special direction in adventure literature. This genre of “criminal fiction” includes such works as the “outcast” of Hugo, the “hunchback” of Feval, the “Petersburg slums” of Krestovsky and many other famous novels (Umberto Eco published a list of forty novels, which are a direct imitation of “Parisian secrets” ).
The book is very realistic depicts a colorful, cruel, adventurous world of the Parisian bottom. Incredible adventures, unexpected plot turns, love affairs and colorful characters continue to worry readers today, and the number of adaptations and theatrical productions of “Parisian secrets” cannot be counted. The text is accompanied by numerous illustrations of the Italian artist Oswaldo Tofani (1849–1915), who have never previously been published in Russia. The first volume included the first five parts of the novel. The second volume included the last five parts of the novel and the epilogue.
