How do citizens of modern Russia relate to their country and realize themselves part of the nation? According to Karin Cleman, the process of national construction in post -Soviet Russia is still not completed. If we turn to the countries of Western Europe or the USA for comparison, then there is a “nation” (with all negative connotations around the term “nationalism”) - one of the fundamental concepts inextricably linked with democracy: a worthy citizen (representative of the nation) is obliged to participate in politics.

What is the essence of patriotic moods in today's Russia? Is this Xenophobic great power or a set of ideas aimed at the consolidation of the emerging nation? Is this ideological propaganda in the name of the irremovability of power or many national memories that are not reduced to one narrative? Does the Russians have the desire for solidarity from below and is it fully controlled from above? The author is trying to answer these questions on the basis of deep interviews with residents of different regions, using high -quality methods for evaluating the statements and behavior of respondents.
