Pavel Kovalevsky. Best paintings. Comp. Astakhov A.
Military correspondents appeared, probably, with the first periodic printed materials. Only instead of the “watering can” of photojournalists, for example, the Great Patriotic War, artists of the second half of the 19th century, seconded to the army, had to have notebooks, pencils and other accessories, allowing them to capture the moment of the battle or events related to the war.
The son of a professor at Kazan University, Pavel Osipovich Kovalevsky, who had a tendency to painting, chose a battal class and in 1863 he entered the Academy of Arts. The Academy has already developed certain traditions of training in battal painting, a powerful impetus for which was given by the Patriotic War of 1812 goals. Having graduated under the leadership of B.P. Villevalde Academy, Kovalevsky on his pensioner trip to Italy for an excavation in the vicinity of Rome (1867) received the title of academician.
The artist also wrote genre scenes, but his affection was determined in childhood. That is why the professor (1881) of the Academy of Arts of the acting Kovalevsky, heading in 1897 the Batal workshop of the Academy of Arts, led it and future Batalist artists until the last days.
