In this book, its author, a well -known geographer, historian of science, philosopher and writer I.M. Zabelin sets out some system of views on the evolution of science and at the same time on the evolution of planet Earth. Already the first edition of the book, published in 1963, played an important role in the subsequent deployment of research on such urgent issues of social forecasting as forecasts in the field of science and technology, social relations, economics and especially the prospects for further development of the earth's surface (geographical prognostics). The book attracted public attention to the social aspects of the process of interaction between nature and society. The second edition, which was released later, was finalized and supplemented by new sections about the problem of humanity from a physical and geographical point of view, about the features of the latest planetary evolution and the problem of the noosphere, about the present and the future of mankind (in conclusion to the book).
