The story “Pit” A. I. Kuprin began to write in 1909 and completed the work six years later. The book about the life of prostitutes caused a condemnation rather than sympathy or understanding. The author was accused of immorality and excessive naturalism. The attitude to the story of L. N. Tolstoy (by the way, the author of the scandalous “cruiser sonata”), who could not read it to the end: “disgusting”, “rudeness of cynical”, “this abomination”, “so disgusting” was sharply negative.. And as if in the peak of Tolstoy, one of the heroes of the “pit” says: “... our artists of the word are the most conscientious and sincere artists in the whole world - for some reason have so far bypassed prostitution and a brothel. Why? Really, it’s hard for me to answer this. Maybe they do not have enough time, nor selflessness, nor self -control to delve into this life and spy it closely, without prejudice, without loud phrases, without shepherd pity, in all its monstrous simplicity and everyday businessiness. Ah, what a huge, amazing and true book would turn out. ” Kuprin managed to create a book that really amazing his truthfulness, and dedicated it to mothers and youth.
