The book includes poems and poems by M. Yu. Lermontov, dedicated to various eras and plots of Russian history from ancient times to the 19th century. A great connoisseur and lover of Russian antiquity, the poet excellently knew the annals, the Old Russian epic and ancient traditions. All this served for him with an inexhaustible source of topics and plots.

The preface to the collection was an article by the publicist and literary critic N. I. Chernyaev (1853–1910), in which the poet’s work is considered in an unexpected perspective.
