The collapse of the USSR is a historical phenomenon, the causes of which are not fully realized twenty years later. This book restores the history of perestroika through the history of Moscow "informal" political clubs-independent of the CPSU organizations that appeared in 1986-1987. Informal clubs turned out to be important and still little -known components of perestroika. They participated in the formation of a new competitive political space that arose since 1987 and radically changed in 1989 after the first free elections.

The research is based on archival funds of clubs (about thirty organizations), numerous in -depth interviews with their activists, as well as unrelated materials from one of the Moscow CPSU district committees, which was supposed to oversee the activities of these clubs.
