This collection includes two early works of Dostoevsky - “Poor People” and “Double”, who marked the birth of the future great novelist.

“Poor people” is a writer's debut novel. After his reading, V. G. Belinsky wrote that the Dostoevsky "name is completely unknown and new, but to whom it seems to be destined to play a significant role in our literature." The touching love story of a small official Makar Devyna and Varenka Dobroselova reveals the eternal theme of the “little man”. Despite the inner beauty and nobility of the soul, they are not able to turn around the circumstances and are doomed to suffering in this cruel world.

In the story “Double”, a deep psychological analysis of split consciousness is given and the theme of duality is brilliantly developed - the human “I” and its shadows. The drama of Mr. Golyadkin, unfolding against the backdrop of the lively streets of St. Petersburg of the 19th century, is largely connected with the artistic world and poetics of Gogol's Petersburg stories.
