The book presents the masterpieces of Japanese female poetry from ancient times to the twentieth century. The Hayan era (794–1185) is generally considered a purely female period in Japanese literature - all the greatest works that Japan are proud of, were created by women. The lot of men in that era and later, in the Middle Ages, was “Chinese wisdom”. Men also wrote poetry in Chinese, but in their verses there is no immediacy and emotionality that are inherent in women's poetry. The tradition of female poetry also lives in modern Japan, which everyone read this book can see. The reader will be able to get acquainted with the biography of each of the poets, and detailed comments will help to enter the mysterious world of traditional Japanese culture. Each translation is preceded by the original text of the poem in Japanese, so the reader has a unique opportunity to see poetry through the eyes of their authors.
