In this book, the famous French sociologist and ethnographer Charles Leturno (1831-1902) conducted a study of the state of morality in different periods of human development.
Using a huge number of historical and ethnographic information, the author sequentially describes the stages of moral evolution, which he gives names that express their common character:
- animal morality (primitive society);
- the morality of the savages (the beginning of the slave system);
- the morality of the barbarians (here S. mortarly attributes both the developed slave states of antiquity and the ancient East and the feudal societies of Europe);
< P> - industrial, or mercantile, morality (modern period of the author).The work also presents a review of various ethical teachings, starting with the theories of Plato and Aristotle and ending with the views of the philosophers of the New Age, including I. Kant, A. Schopenhauer, G. Spencer.
