The hero of the book - an Algerian teenager - love mathematics, music and football. He realized early that he, born in the family of the poor, was not waiting for anything good in this life: either dull work for pennies at the factory, or joining a street gang. Having accumulated some money, he decides with his grandfather's blessing on a desperately bold step: he is illegally running from Algeria to France.

But intoxication by the first sips of freedom air quickly passes. The Arab guy without documents, who does not know a word in French, has to agree to any work, live starving, sleeping in wretched rooms. But he knows that this is not for long. The main thing is to get an education. And he enters the Technical School.

it would seem the most difficult already behind. But then fate inflicts a crushing blow to him. Waking up one morning, he understands that he sees nothing - a continuous red veil is standing in front of his eyes. Months of treatment and several operations end in nothing. He will become blind. The new homeland is ready to take it in care. But did he go here for this? Escaping from one cage, he does not agree to sit in another. And he intends to prove to himself and the world that he is stronger than blindness.
