In his views on the revival of Pater, Pater is in solidarity with the French historian J. Michel, on the "History of France" of which he relied in historical research. The themes of the studies included in the book are taken from the history of the Renaissance; They relate to the main points of this complex, multilateral movement. In the first of them, Pater tried to show what he means by the word Renaissance, interpreting him in a broad sense. An article about Winkelman, with amazing clarity revealing the motives and goals of the Renaissance, adjoins these sketches. The essay on Winkelman is not included in the book not by chance. In the German thinker, Pater saw the last representative of the culture of the European Renaissance, which devoted his life to the study of classical antiquity and the revival on its basis of perfection lost by art.
