One of the most valuable park roses is wrinkled rose, or rose rugoz (R. Rugosa). The original species is common in our country in the regions of the Far East, in Sakhalin and Kamchatka, as well as in North China, Korea, Japan. There is in two forms: one with white flowers, the other with dark pink or red. This species is considered the most important for hybridization of winter -hardy varieties. Flowers from 5 to 10 cm in diameter, very fragrant, in inflorescences of 3-6 flowers or single. The leaves are large, hard, wrinkled. The shoots are densely covered with scarf straight spikes and bristles. The bushes reach a height of 1-2 m, wide, thick, giving strong shoots with erect shoots. The root system is strongly unit, superficial.

The flowering is plentiful, from the end V, prolonged, in a weaker form can be repeated. Flowering can occur not only on last year, but also on young shoots. Thanks to this feature, on the bushes there are simultaneously fruits and flowers. Forms and varieties with terry flowers are especially capable of this, which is valuable in decorative terms.

Fruits are spherical or flattened-spas-shaped, bright, orange-red, large (2–2.5 cm), very decorative. The bushes winter without shelter, resistant to disease. The flowers of hybrid varieties of rugose from white to dark red, there are also yellow, different in size and terry. Typical hybrids (closest to the original form) are very frost -resistant (do not require shelter for the winter), unpretentious in culture, decorative.

are used for small group and single plantings, hedges, fruits are used for cooking jam and compotes. Some varieties (‘Golden King’, ‘Konrad Ferdinand Meyer’, ‘Rugelda’) do not differ in winter hardiness. Their color -bearing shoots appear on the overwintering upper shoots of the last year. Without protection for the winter or deep snow cover, the young increase is subject to significant freezing. And the surviving lower buds are not able to provide flowering.
