Rus' and Islam. X - XVI centuries. Batun M.
A brilliant study of Batun Mark is devoted to how the world of Islam was perceived by medieval Russia. With the involvement of a large number of sources, it is told how the Russian attitude towards Islam, what influence on this process, had a Byzantine tradition and how Muslims, which, to a large extent, contributed to the “Mongolian era”, were transferred to the centuries -old fears before the nomadic hordes. But as it was released from the yoke, strengthening the Russian state and expanding the amount of knowledge about Islam, anti -Islamic phobias were replaced by the periphery of national consciousness, and the image of a Muslim lost a unambiguous negative coloring. By the time of the reign of Ivan the Terrible, intransigence gave way to pragmatic considerations, and now Magmet-Sultan is portrayed by an ideal ruler, and the Russian aristocracy is rapidly replenished with representatives of the Tatar elite. Mark Batunsky (1933-1997) - historian, Islamic schola, candidate of philosophical sciences, in the last years of life, Professor of Cologne University.
