The Great Northern War of 1700-1721. was a turning point in the history of Russia and many other countries of Northern and Eastern Europe. For Russia, the result of participation in the coalition of European countries directed against Sweden was the return of previously lost lands, the consolidation of access to the Baltic Sea and transformation into a great power. This volume tells about the first stage of the Great Northern War. Events are traced from the defeat of the Russian army near Narva on November 19 (30), 1700 to the crushing defeat of the Swedes near Poltava on June 27 (July 8) 1709. In domestic literature, the description of these crucial events was given mainly on the support of Russian sources. In the new monograph by the Doctor of Historical Sciences A.V. Bespalova presented a holistic picture of military and diplomatic confrontation during the Northern War.
