The genre of this book is difficult to determine - travel notes, a sociological essay, political commentary or economic treatise... Reasoning about the nature of Bolshevism, Soviet ideology and society are replaced by household sketches, a description of the concession policy of the Soviet government or a characteristic of the Russian peasantry. The book has many accurate observations, but there are naive generalizations. Nevertheless, this book played its own, albeit small, role in several years of establishing diplomatic relations between the USSR and the USA.
