The relationship of Russia and the West has never been even or simple. The periods of rapprochement were invariably alternated with periods of cooling and even hostility. At the same time, the West usually reproached for “barbaric” Russia in material poverty, and the Russians accused the “barbaric” West of mercantilism and spiritual poverty. Nevertheless, mutual influence was much more significant than it is commonly believed.
