The history of the 20th century in Russia is marked by a series of shocks, which over and over again experienced the country and its legacy for strength. Many religious monuments -temples, monasteries, chapels -targetedly destroyed by the Soviet regime, came into desolation and destroyed. The rapid development and urbanization, in turn, did not contribute to the preservation of the historical development of Russian cities. Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky made us a huge gift, capturing in color everything that we are used to calling “leaving nature”: wooden architecture, monastery architecture, noble estates , peasant settlements and life. Russia on the threshold of the 20th century in his pictures seemed to freeze in anticipation of future shocks. This was not preserved by either the newsreel that spread at the same time, nor picturesque works - eloquent witnesses of the era, but still to a certain extent unreliable.
