This book contains stories, essays, articles and letters of Alexei Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1883-1945) about war and patriotism. In the center of the collection is the cycle "The Stories of Ivan Sudarev." There is no abstract reasoning. The author describes the life, the nature of his heroes, their thoughts and dialogues. In 1943, Tolstoy was a member of the first open processes over accomplices of fascist criminals and helped in preparing materials for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg.
